Amazon.com will voluntarily collect state and local sales tax on online purchases by Ohio consumers starting today. What do you think about that?
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- In exchange for locating three data centers outside of Columbus and creating 1,000 jobs over the next several years, Amazon.com will voluntarily collect state and local sales tax on online purchases by Ohio consumers starting today (Monday, June 1).
Before today, the online retailer had for left it up to its consumers in Ohio and other states to keep track of and pay their own state sales tax, which few people actually did. Some say the state lost out on tens of millions in uncollected sales tax revenue as a result.
Local retailers and retail groups on Friday applauded Amazon's decision as long overdue, because they have spent years trying to require online stores to collect the same sales taxes brick-and-mortar stores are required to.
But what do you think about Amazon's change in policy? Will it affect your likelihood of buying from Amazon? Tell us in the adjacent poll.
