FirstEnergy could leave Akron HQ when lease ends
FirstEnergy announced that it has agreed to stay in its downtown Akron headquarters.

AKRON, Ohio -- FirstEnergy Corp. is staying in downtown Akron at least until 2025, and maybe longer.

The company said Thursday that it has signed an 8.5 year lease extension with McKinley Inc., owner of the 19-story downtown building that was constructed in 1976 with Ohio Edison as its main tenant.

The current lease would have expired in 2016, and the company had considered moving the headquarters.  Terms of the extension were not released.

In a prepared statement, Charles "Chuck" Jones, FirstEnergy's CEO since January,  stressed the company's ongoing commitment to the City of Akron.

"The announcement reaffirms how much we value calling Akron our home and we look forward to being a major presence in this key downtown location for years to come," said Jones.

The downtown building houses 900 FirstEnergy employees. The company in 2007 built a 200,000 square-foot complex near I-77 to house more than 600 FirstEnergy Solutions and FirstEnergy Generation subsidiary employees near an existing Ohio Edison facility and company call center that is home to 1,300 employees.

Ohio Edison or one of its predecessors has been an Akron company for more than a century.
