RPM buys Krud Kutter, a Georgia maker of non-toxic, biodegradable cleaners and removers

Krud Kutter says on its website that "we believe cleaners should clean without being toxic" and that its eco-friendly formula is safe for the environment, pets and children.

BRUNSWICK HILLS TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- RPM International's Rust-Oleum Group has just bought Krud Kutter Inc., a Georgia based producer of biodegradable, water-based, non-toxic, and VOC-compliant cleaners and removers for residential, commercial and industrial uses. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

RPM is a multinational holding company in Medina County with subsidiaries that manufacture and market high-performance coatings, sealants and specialty chemicals, including brands such as Stonhard, Tremco, Zinsser and Rust-Oleum.

Krud Kutter, based in Cumming, Georgia, says on its website that "we believe cleaners should clean without being toxic" and that its eco-friendly formula is safe for the environment, pets and children.

"VOC-compliant" means its products contain fewer volatile organic compounds to comply with local, state or federal laws and have less of an impact on the environment.

"We have partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Design for the Environment (DfE) program to put our formulations through extensive testing and ensure that our ingredients meet the program's stringent criteria for health and environmental safety," the company said.

"Krud Kutter safely removes the toughest stains and everyday messes that most 'all-purpose' cleaners can't touch -- grime, grease, pet stains, and crayons. It even removes dried latex paint and permanent marker," the website continues.

Its products are sold at more than 15,000 retailers, including home centers, hardware stores, paint stores, mass merchants, warehouse clubs, and industrial supply retailers, from Discount Drug Mart to Sherwin-Williams Paint Stores.

"Krud Kutter-brand products are used by major industrial applicators (Ford, General Motors, Boeing), schools, hospitals, hotels, theme parks (Disney, Six Flags), cruise lines (Royal Caribbean, Carnival), and numerous contractors."

The company, with annual sales of about $13 million, is expected to contribute to RPM's earnings within the year.

"The Krud Kutter brand is expected to benefit from Rust-Oleum's marketing and category management expertise to further penetrate what is currently a fragmented market category," RPM Chairman and Chief Executive Frank C. Sullivan said in a written statement.

"Krud Kutter President Ed Rice will continue to lead the business, and we are pleased to welcome him to the RPM family," he added.

RPM announced the Krud Kutter deal three weeks after it bought Betumat Quimica Ltda., a Brazilian manufacturer of waterproofing products with annual net sales of approximately $22 million.

Betumat Quimica was acquired by Viapol, now part of RPM's Performance Coatings Group and its Northeast Ohio-based Euclid Chemical Co. It is RPM's second major acquisition in Brazil since Viapol Ltda., a major Brazilian manufacturer of building materials and construction products, in 2012.
