Squire Patton Boggs law firm acquires Mamiya Law Offices in Tokyo

"Our combination with the Mamiya Law Office builds upon our cross-border corporate and transactional capabilities in Japan, which date back to the 1950s," David Goodman, managing partner of Squire Patton Boggs' Cleveland office, said.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Squire Patton Boggs, the law firm created by Squire Sanders' recent merger with Patton Boggs, on Monday announced its acquisition of Mamiya Law Offices, a boutique firm in Tokyo.

Mamiya Law Offices, a five-lawyer corporate and transactional practice, joins Squire Sanders Boggs' more than 1,500 lawyers in 44 offices in 21 countries.

After the merger, Squire Sanders Boggs will have nearly 40 lawyers in Tokyo and more than 140 in the Asia Pacific region. The Cleveland office, where Squire Sanders was founded, is the firm's third largest after Washington, D.C., and London.

Mamiya was founded in 2008 by Jun Mamiya and specializes in domestic and international transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, corporate restructuring and reorganizations, joint ventures, private equity, and securities. The firm said it also has expertise in international trade, litigation and international arbitration.

"Our combination with the Mamiya Law Office builds upon our cross-border corporate and transactional capabilities in Japan, which date back to the 1950s," said David Goodman, managing partner of Squire Patton Boggs' Cleveland office, in a written statement.

"Anything that enhances our ability to represent the interests of our clients in the growing Asian economy is an enhancement of our Cleveland office because so many of our regional clients have a vital interest in doing business in that part of the world," he added.

Ken Kurosu, Squire Patton Boggs' Asia regional coordinator and office managing partner in Tokyo, said, "We have developed a strong relationship with Mamiya-sensei, having first worked together almost 20 years ago. Not only do we share a number of major public institutional clients, but there are synergies with our financial services and intellectual property practices in Tokyo, which will lead to new and exciting opportunities in Japan as well as elsewhere around the world."

Jun Mamiya is a graduate of the law faculty of Kyushu University, and Japan's Legal Research and Training Institute. He was admitted to practice law in Japan in 1988 and is a former partner at Hashidate Law Offices and at Atsumi & Partners.

Mamiya said in a written statement, "Squire Patton Boggs presents a leading global platform and depth of experience in countries where our clients seek to do business. As part of a global practice, we will now be able to offer clients considerable added value and leverage our presence to support our clients on significant international projects."
