Third-generation co-owners Chas and Gordon Geiger, who already have stores in Lakewood and Chagrin Falls, said their newest location will open this fall in the Ivory on Euclid at 1020 Euclid Ave.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Family-owned Geiger's clothing and sporting goods has announced plans to open its third Cleveland-area store, next door to the downtown Heinen's Fine Foods that opened three months ago.
Third-generation co-owners Chas and Gordon Geiger, who already have stores in Lakewood and Chagrin Falls, said their newest location will open this fall in the ground floor of the Ivory on Euclid (formerly the Truman Building) at 1020 Euclid Ave., just east of Heinen's. The brothers have signed a letter of intent to that effect with CRM Companies Inc., which owns and manages the building.
Like the other Geiger's locations, the 4,200-square-foot Cleveland store will offer casual clothing, activewear, travel clothing and footwear for men and women, including brands such as Patagonia, SmartWool, Barbour, Arc'teryx, Sorel, Southern Tide, and Eagle Creek.
"For four generations, our family has been dedicated to retail in the Cleveland community," Chas Geiger said in a written announcement. "Our grandfather operated several stores downtown and throughout the west side in the early years of the 20th century. We're excited by the commercial revitalization of downtown Cleveland, the fast growing urban residential population and the success of the new Heinen's. This is a great opportunity for Geiger's."
Gordon Geiger said in the same release that "We look forward to serving downtown residents, visitors and workers and to be part of the rebirth of our city. We are bringing the same high quality products and service that people find in our other stores to our new downtown location. We are also planning to preserve some of the unique characteristics of the historic Ivory Building in our store design."
Geigers, founded in 1932 by Charley Geiger Sr., has been a community fixture for years. In 1995, a Chardon High School alum rushed into the Lakewood store minutes before a Hilltoppers football game and spent $700 on a dozen pairs of football shoes with molded cleats after a snowstorm dumped four inches of wet snow on the artificial turf. Chardon won the state playoffs, 42-14, according to Plain Dealer reporter Tim Warsinskey.
Geiger's is now managed by Chas and Gordon Geiger, and their wives, Patti and Susan, respectively, with help from the fourth generation: Chas and Patti's daughter, Christy, their son-in-law, Robert, and Gordon and Susan's son, John.
The mixed-use Ivory on Euclid Building, built in 1911, will also house 29 high-end apartments within walking distance of the Gateway District, the East Fourth Street entertainment district, and PlayhouseSquare theaters.
"We are delighted that the Geiger family has decided to open their newest store in the Ivory on Euclid Building," said Brian Intihar, vice president of CRM Companies Inc. "Our investments in downtown are predicated on high quality, well-known retailers like Geiger's becoming a new, exciting part of our downtown family."
Joe Marinucci, president and chief executive of the Downtown Cleveland Alliance, which is based in the 1010 Euclid Ave. building, said: "Downtown's population growth is attracting a lot of attention. At the beginning of 2015, 15 new retailers committed to downtown. Geiger's will continue the forward momentum of downtown's retail growth with another high quality, locally operated brand."
Geiger's Chagrin Falls store, at 50 Shopping Plaza Drive, sells bicycles, cycling equipment and accessories, camping and hiking clothing, equipment and accessories. Geiger's Lakewood store, at 14710 Detroit Ave., sells men's and women's clothing and accessories and offers custom tailoring. Both stores also sell clothing and equipment for snow skiing, snowboarding and winter sports. The family also sells its goods online at shopgeigers.com
