Best Buy now offers a wedding registry for couples craving electronic gifts

"Electronics and small appliances are as important to today's newlyweds as silverware and towels," said Wendy Fritz, Best Buy's head of gifting strategy.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Just in time for those Valentine's Day engagements, Best Buy has just launched its first wedding registry for tech-savvy couples who would rather receive GoPro cameras and Ultra HD TVs than matching china.

"Electronics and small appliances are as important to today's newlyweds as silverware and towels," Wendy Fritz, Best Buy's head of gifting strategy, said in a written announcement. "The Best Buy Wedding Registry has the gifts that couples want and need -- and that both brides and grooms can get excited about."

Best Buy, the nation's largest electronics retailer, is hoping to tap into the lucrative wedding gift market, as well as extend its appeal beyond the fourth quarter holiday shopping season. According to The Knot 2014 Bridal Registry, more than 1.5 million couples register for wedding gifts every year, signing up with an average of three retailers.

Couples can create and keep track of their registries at BestBuy.com/WeddingRegistry, via Best Buy's mobile app, or via in-store kiosks at Best Buy stores starting in April. Best Buy has 12 stores in Northeast Ohio, including locations in Akron, Avon, Cuyahoga Falls, Elyria, Macedonia, Mayfield Heights, Mentor, North Canton, North Olmsted, Parma, Strongsville and Wooster.

Couples can also sync their registry with wedding sites MyRegistry.com or TheKnot.com.

MyRegistry.com President Nancy Lee told The Associated Press that she expects more registries to follow Best Buy and try to appeal specifically to grooms, noting that some of the most popular items on Best Buy's registry include: GoPro Hero3 cameras, Sony PlayStation 4 consoles and Apple TVs.

Best Buy said its most wanted tech gifts for new couples range from wireless speakers to cameras to kitchen gadgets and appliances. It said couples can register for and that gift-givers can buy "nearly everything Best Buy sells, from technology gifts to home appliances, and all of the very best brands like Apple, Dyson, GoPro, Keurig, Nest, Beats, Sony, Samsung and more."

Like other wedding registry sites, Best Buy offers gift-givers the option of contributing toward a group purchase of a larger item they might not be able to afford on their own.

All wedding registry purchases come with free shipping, with no minimum purchase. The engaged couple also gets a one-time 10-percent off coupon toward completing whatever wasn't bought off of their registry.
