Zagara's Marketplace groceries now available via Presto Fresh delivery

"Presto Fresh gives us wheels," said third-generation president John Zagara. "We'll be able to reach customers that I would never have dreamed of reaching 10 years ago."

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Six months after Steve deMoulpied launched his Presto Fresh grocery delivery service in Cuyahoga County, the business has gotten a major new partner and supplier of fresh foods in Zagara's Marketplace in Cleveland Heights.

Customers who browse Presto Fresh's website at prestofreshgrocery.com will soon have tens of thousands more items to choose from, especially in key perishables such as dairy, produce, frozen foods and meat.

For Presto Fresh, which launched on Nov. 29, 2013, the deal exponentially multiplies its 5,000-item inventory without having to buy more coolers or expand its 7,000-square-foot warehouse in Warrensville Heights.

And Zagara's, a family-owned supermarket that began as a corner grocery store on Cleveland's Kinsman Avenue in 1936, will now be able to expand its customer base -- and perhaps ring up sales -- beyond shoppers in the Heights.

"Presto Fresh gives us wheels," said John Zagara, the third generation of his family to run the business. "We'll be able to reach customers that I would never have dreamed of reaching 10 years ago."

Presto Fresh delivers to all of Cuyahoga County as well as parts of Lorain (Avon and North Ridgeville) and Lake Counties (Willoughby, Wickliffe, and Eastlake), with store-to-door delivery seven days a week.

Both deMoulpied and Zagara said they hit it off immediately and have spent months trying to create the perfect symbiotic business partnership.

"We're impressed by their innovative approach, their energy, and their commitment to customer satisfaction," Zagara said. "We've been around for 78 years, but we're always looking for new and better ways to meet customers' demands and needs."

Zagara's Marketplace last year completed a $400,000 renovation and overhaul of its store, expanding its offerings and modernizing the store as part of efforts to make itself more of a destination grocer.

Zagara's will supply Presto Fresh with Ohio-raised meats, locally grown produce, and specialty items including imported and certified products.

"We're extremely pleased to be able to partner with one of the strongest, most iconic names in the industry," said PrestoFresh owner deMoulpied, in a statement.

"It's an independent, family-owned business that cares about customer service as much as we do."

Here's how Presto Fresh works: Customers browse among the 5,000 items on the website, click on what they want and in what quantities, and pay in advance online.

Items are delivered within a day or two within a two-hour window between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., seven days a week. Orders received by 1 p.m. can be delivered the next day.

The minimum order is $50, not including a $7.95 to $9.95 delivery charge, depending on how much you buy, with extra discounts for people who are more flexible about when they get their delivery.

Zagara said eventually, the two hope to offer Presto Fresh customers nearly everything his in-store customers can buy, with the exception of beer, wine and spirits. "But we're working on that one," he said. "We're checking the laws very carefully to see if we can do it."

Other than that, the two report that the partnership is well underway. DeMoulpied has moved into Zagara's store as he works to catalog new offerings and add them to his website.

John Zagara of Zagara's Marketplace aims to thrive and prosper despite a 24-7 Walmart opening nearby in 2013
View full sizeJohn Zagara, right, puts a glass bottle of egg nog in the shopping cart of longtime customers Earl and Adella Blount in this December 2012 file photo. Zagara, which has tried several tactics to grow, including catering, gift baskets and buying a second store in Richmond Heights, is now hoping to grow sales via Presto Fresh grocery delivery service.
Zagara's in-store customers will still get perks that online customers won't, such as ZMP Preferred loyalty gold points, access to the butchers or bakery manager, occasional unadvertised specials, or the ability to special-order their favorite hard-to-find items.

But deMoulpied, who based Presto Fresh on a service he ordered from in Chicago, is betting that his customers will still appreciate the convenience of being able to shop online and have one less errand to run. He is also hoping to partner with companies interested in offering either home or office grocery delivery as a workplace perk.

"Busy professionals and families don't always have the time to make specials trips to a traditional grocery store or market," he said. "And some elderly persons or people with physical or medical limitations find it difficult to get out. We're able to eliminate the inconvenience and overcome the challenges related to mobility and access."
