The Fortune 1000 technology company received $56 million in incentives from the state of Ohio toward the cost of its $100 million global headquarters.
GREEN, Ohio -- ATM maker Diebold Inc. announced on Thursday that it will build its $100 million world headquarters in the city of Green.Diebold said it has signed a purchase agreement for 55 acres at the intersection of Massillon Road and Town Park Boulevard, near southbound Interstate 77.
It also has the right of first refusal on an adjacent 36 acres.
Diebold President and Chief Executive Thomas Swidarski said the new headquarters would improve the company's ability to attract and retain top talent and would consolidate operations on a single modern campus.
"About 70 percent of our local associates live in Stark County, and we take our 140-year presence in the Canton area very seriously. However, our extensive evaluation showed that the company's needs would best be met by everything offered by our preferred site in Green," he said in a statement.
Pending environmental testing and approvals from the state, the city of Green and the local school board, Diebold would break ground on the new site in 2013.
Construction of the 500,000-square-foot facility could take two to three years.
The Fortune 1000 technology company said April 12 that it would build a state-of-the-art world headquarters and corporate campus somewhere in the Akron-Canton region, but said it had not yet chosen a site.
After the company received offers from North Carolina and Virginia to relocate its corporate offices there, Diebold received a $56 million incentive package of grants, tax breaks and loans from the state of Ohio to stay here.
Diebold, which employs about 1,900 people at seven facilities in the Akron-Canton area, plans to consolidate five of those facilities and 1,500 workers on its new campus. About 400 other employees will stay at two other locations in Summit County.
