Although many companies offer unpaid time off after the birth of a child under the Family and Medical Leave Act, some Top Workplaces employers go beyond that with generous family-friendly benefits.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Some of The Plain Dealer's 100 Top Workplaces in 2016 also happen to provide exceptionally generous and family-friendly benefits for their employees.

Quicken Loans offers coverage for infertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilization.

"Not only do we cover the cost of the prescriptions, which often is around $10,000, we also cover all procedures associated with IVF," with no monetary limit, said spokesman Jordan Fylonenko.

Quicken Loans' medical insurance also covers all the procedures, testing or therapies required for the treatment of disorders such as autism. "Many states have minimum required coverage -- often with an age and dollar limit, but we extended this coverage for all dependents under the age of 18, with no dollar limit," he said.

"The health and wellness of our team members and their families is of utmost importance," Fylonenko said. "Regardless of the situation, we make sure our team members have the medical coverage needed to ensure the highest quality of life and peace of mind for the most important people in their lives."

These are some of the other top perks for parents:

Parental Leave: Although many companies offer unpaid time off after the birth of a child under the Family and Medical Leave Act, some employers go beyond that:

-- Gilbane Building Co. offers paid maternity leave and adoption assistance of up to $5,000 per child.

-- Bialosky Cleveland offers employees leaves of absence for up to six months after the birth of a child or for medical reasons, without losing their benefits.

-- DDR Corp. offers up to 12 weeks of maternity and paternity leave for new parents, whether by birth or adoption, as well as the option to contribute toward a 529 college savings plan.

"We've always been a very family-friendly company," but when David Oakes became DDR's president and CEO, he made those policies a bigger priority, said Mark Floyd, executive vice president of employment. "He has young children of his own, and he understands what it's like to work for a large company with young children." Oakes has two elementary school-aged sons.

DDR parents can take up to 12 weeks off, using their paid time off or supplemental hours. Both men and women at DDR take parental leave, with no social stigma at all, Floyd said. "The moms tend to take the whole time, but the dads don't," he said. "They might take a week."
