Northeast Ohio, already home to several locally owned outdoors and recreational stores, is about to get some more national retailers, including REI, Cabela's and possibly a Bass Pro Shops store. But locals say the national chains can't compete with the level of customer service and local know-how of the family-owned stores such as Appalachian Outfitters, the Backpackers Shop, and Great Lakes Outdoor Supply. Considering our proximity to Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Lake Erie, the popularity of the Ohio State Parks system, and the abundance of trails, rivers, campgrounds and bike paths here, some Ohioans are saying the recognition by retailers is long overdue.
